Any potential new product using culinary alcohol brands supplied by Thomas Lowndes & Co is subject to product and packaging approval to ensure accurate representation of the brand. Manufacturers are required by law to apply for the use of a registered trademark and new product investment should not be undertaken until the application is granted.
There are four stages to product and packaging approval:
1) Food Concept Approval - discuss your requirements with Thomas Lowndes at the very beginning of new product development. Thomas Lowndes’ culinary alcohol expert, Sharon Riddick, can advise on all matters relating to the use of alcohol in food including dosage levels, applications and technical queries. Alcohol samples, dosage forms and Trademark Guidelines are issued at this stage.
2) Food Product Approval - once a new product has been developed Thomas Lowndes require two identical samples along with a completed application form to apply for the use of the registered trademarks. New products are assessed by an objective tasting panel. Thomas Lowndes will contact the manufacturer verbally to either approve the product or suggest ways in which it can be improved. Approval is only given on the basis that the product delivers distinctive characteristics of the alcohol brand flavour
3) Packaging Approval - manufacturers must send a pdf of the artwork to Thomas Lowndes for approval. Trademarks must be accurately represented on pack and all packaging/promotional material must be approved before printing. We can assist and advise at any stage of packaging design but strongly recommend liaison from the initial concept design stage. Note that two colour copies of artwork for each brand must be submitted before approval can be given.
4) Final approval – subject to compliance with the previous two stages we will issue a formal authority to use the trademark.
